RENEWLA began in 2007 as a small group of working professionals and emerging artists who had a simple burden to serve the city of Los Angeles where there were social needs. For two years this informal group tried various things to serve the city: soup kitchens, building homes, reading to kids, taking inner city kids on field trips, parent’s night out dinner for inner city workers, and family fall festivals in Watts. During this journey the group realized that it had a gift and desire to serve inner-city children in the areas of education, music, and art. In 2008 this group incorporated under the name RENEWLA with a vision to provide supplementary education to inner city kids in the greater downtown area. In 2009 RENEWLA became a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
